Mamelodi Sundowns’ victory over Sekhukhune United on Friday means the 2025 Nedbank Cup quarterfinal round is complete and we can add up the numbers on this stage of the competition.

0 – Marumo Gallants are the only team yet to concede a goal in this year’s Nedbank Cup having played over five hours of football. Kaizer Chiefs have conceded once, Sundowns twice and defending champions Orlando Pirates four times.

1 – Pirates’ shoot-out win over SuperSport United was the first time they have beaten a top-flight team via spot-kicks in the Nedbank Cup. Their win-loss record reads 3-4, with their other victories coming against Thanda Royal Zulu (2014) and Dondol Stars (2023), who were second and third division teams respectively at the time.

3 – Gallants maintained their record of never having lost a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal after they advanced with a shoot-out win over Durban City. They made it three from three. They have also never lost a Nedbank Cup semifinal …

3 – Three of the four quarterfinal tires went to extra-time and two needed penalties. Pirates needed spot-kicks to defeat SuperSport after a 2-2 draw, while Gallants edged past Durban City in a shoot-out after they ended 0-0. Sundowns beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 in extra-time to avoid penalties.

3 – Three of the four away sides triumphed in the quarterfinals. Only Sundowns managed a home win as Pirates, Chiefs and Gallants were all victorious on the road.

3 – Chiefs’ 3-1 away win at Stellenbosch FC was the first time they have netted three times on the road in the Nedbank Cup since a 4-2 win in the semifinals at Chippa United in 2019.

4 – Gallants’ spot-kicks win over Durban City means they have won all four Nedbank Cup penalty shootouts they have been involved in. They also beat Moroka Swallows, Sundowns (both 2021) and Pirates (2022). They meet the latter again in this year’s semifinals.

5 – Sundowns reach the Nedbank Cup semifinals for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The only odd year out was when the lost 2-1 to Stellenbosch FC in the quarterfinals in 2023.

7 – Pirates have earned a seventh Nedbank Cup semifinal appearance since 2011 as they face Gallants in the last-4. They have won all six previous visits to this stage of the competition.

9 – The number of goals scored in the four quarterfinals. It is the first time we have not seen double figures at this stage of the competition since 2020 (8 goals) and the joint fifth lowest number in the quarterfinals in the 18 seasons of the Nedbank Cup.

10 – Chiefs have now scored 10 goals in three rounds of the Nedbank Cup after a 4-0 win over third-tier Free Agents, 3-0 success against Chippa United and 3-1 win at Stellenbosch FC. No team has scored more in this year’s competition.

10 – Sundowns’ win over Sekhukhune United means they will extend their own record of Nedbank Cup semifinal appearances to 10 in the 18 years of the competition since 2008. Pirates are second with seven, while Chiefs now have six and Gallants three.

13 – Pirates coach Jose Riveiro is now unbeaten in the Nedbank Cup for 13 games, as he extended his own record for a coach following the 2-2 draw with SuperSport. He is hoping to lead Pirates to a third successive title.

14 – Sundowns extended their unbeaten home run in the Nedbank Cup to 14 games, having not lost on their own patch in the competition since 2017.

82 – The number of goals scored in the 2025 Nedbank Cup campaign to date from 27 matches, a healthy average of 3.04 per game.

100 – Chiefs maintained their 100% win record against Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup. They have won all three ties the teams have played since 2017, scoring eight goals in the process.
